No, this is not an entry about the University of Michigan (I think their colors are officially blue and gold anyway). Even though, hats off to them for smashing Notre Dame yesterday.
I came across a goofy little song and thought it would be the perfect accompaniment to an entry about Ikea. The Ikea in Chicago (the original, not the new one, we Chicagolanders are so spoiled to have two) is like an oasis in a shopping hell desert. It lures you in with its big, boxy, blue and yellowness, visible clearly even from the air, as I learned in my recent flight out of Ohare. The roads in Schaumburg make Ikea incredibly hard to get to, swinging you around Woodfield Mall and a string of ubiquitous chain restaurants, so that when you get there you feel like you've arrived.
It's a great grab and go spot, not so great when you actually try to
buy furniture to construct, god forbid. Its a pain in the ass to figure
out all the little pieces you need to create a bathroom cabinet and
while your stand in front of the guy at the computer there are twenty
people in line behind you breathing down your neck, so it's not your
fault when you get home and the cabinet door is too damn long. Then you
have to haul that shit all the way back to the boondock suburbs,
lugging it on your back like an Egyptian carrying a pyramid brick (not
really, but I like the image), and the person at the return desk tells
you to take a number and wait. So you wait over 10 minutes for your
appropriately lengthed 20" cabinet door and then you see a sign that
says you get a free beverage if you wait more than 8 minutes. So, greedy,
entitled little American that you are you demand payment of that kind
offering, even though you aren't intending to get your free beverage
anyway. That said, my cabinet is fully assembled though slightly wobbly
because of uneven legs. It's a lovely piece of furniture. Thank you
Ikea.
