Oh, good ol' Wyomin'. Five days was enough in the backwoods for me. I didn't see Brokeback but I did see plenty of deer and elk. Wyoming has the least dense population out of all the states (or maybe that's Alaska, oh well) and that is too few people for me. But that must be why my grandpa likes it. That's probably a good thing, fewer lives for him to threaten.
It's okay though, I got to let my inner cowgirl hang out. I rode an ATV and a jackalope. I lazed about in a log cabin. I watched a little three-year-old hug her pet goat. I hunted for Indian petroglyphs. Grandpa says when I come back next summer I can learn to fish and shoot a gun.
For the people in Wyoming, the cowboy ethic is alive. It's not
nostalgic, not parody. Everyone hunts. Everyone totes guns around in
their four-wheel drives. They eat lots of steak, I'm sure. No, I take
that back. Lots and lots of game animals. They wear cowboy hats and
decorate with elk antlers without the least bit of irony. It's not
something I could ever buy into. It's just not me. I would shoot myself
in the foot before becoming so insular. Good thing Wyoming only has one
vote in the House of Representatives.
